Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa – Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 15 November 2025:
Another day well spent at Marine Dynamics, with two trips heading out today, each one filled with amazing sightings. As we followed the coastline, our first stop brought guests face-to-fin with the Bronze whaler sharks gliding gracefully through the shallows near the shark diving vessels. Their bronze shimmer gives our guests a beautiful introduction to life beneath the waves. Further along in the calm waters of Pearly Beach, both trips were treated to sightings of Southern Right whales. Some pairs moved slowly through the bay while others offered peaceful moments of tail lifts and gentle rolls. One of the trips was even lucky enough to have spotted a rarer sighting this time around, the Bryde’s whale, our resident whale species. A visit to Geyser Rock brought all the energy as hundreds of Cape fur seals lounged, barked, and splashed about their rocky home. We even spotted a few individuals showing off their brand new little ones. We wrapped up the experience at Dyer Island, where the beloved African penguins stood proudly along the shoreline. Some waddled between the rocks while others relaxed in the sun, giving guests a close look at one of our endangered species.

As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.

With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.

The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.

Brydes Whale Brydes Whale
The mysterious Bryde's whales visit the Dyer Island area throughout the year, with most sightings occurring during summer into winter.
