Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa – Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 02 April 2026:
Another great day out of Kleinbaai! The fish we had in the bay over the past few days is still around and attracting a variety of wildlife to the bay. Not very long after we left the harbour, we spotted a Bryde’s whale and lots of Cape Gannets. We also saw some penguins and then travelled for a while beside a pod of common dolphins before we saw a small bait ball. After our last look at the dolphins, we saw some Bronze Whaler sharks at our shark cage diving boat.
Once at Geyser Rock, we saw plenty of Cape fur seals, and closer to Dyer Island, we got to see more of the critically endangered African Penguins.

What species did we see today?

As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.

The mysterious Bryde's whales visit the Dyer Island area throughout the year, with most sightings occurring during summer into winter.
