Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 22 February 2024:
Today has been overcast with a light breeze and some swell rolling into the bay. At the beginning of the tour, we were heading along the coast where we got to encounter a sunfish close to shore! We continued towards the shallows where we saw not just the Bronze Whale sharks at the shark cage diving vessel but also a Short-tailed stingray. After we passed a reef system we headed into deeper waters where we were lucky enough to have spotted Bryde’s whales! After spending some time with them we let them be, moved on and shortly after arrived at Geyser Rock we saw thousands of Cape fur seals, plenty in the water too. At Dyer Island, we had a closer look at the seabirds and tried to spot some penguins as well. It can be tricky some days especially when there are so many Cape Cormorants on the island. On our way back to Kleinbaai Harbour though, we did come across a small raft of Penguins!

The mysterious Bryde's whales visit the Dyer Island area throughout the year, with most sightings occurring during summer into winter.

With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.

The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.
