Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 23 January 2023:
A fantastic morning on the sea with many different sightings. We had large groups of Cape Cormorants seen throughout the bay, Bronze whaler sharks at one of the shark cage diving vessels in the Shallows, and African penguins along the water’s edge of Dyer Island with Cape fur seals on the nearby colony of Geyser Rock. The deeper waters around the bay held quite a few surprises for us including three separate encounters with adult Bryde’s whales along with a Sunfish feasting on small jellyfish.

The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.

As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.

One of the most famous species of Cormorant in the Western Cape, the Cape Cormorant is well known for it's beautiful turquoise eye and impressive size.
