Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 27 June 2024:
After being out at sea for quite a bit of time searching for some marine life, we were rewarded at the end! Welcoming our guests aboard Dream Catcher we left Kleinbaai Harbour behind us and headed first into deeper waters. Out there we spotted our first whales, the Bryde’s whales! After spending some time with it we decided to let it be and headed into the bay where we stopped by the Shark cage diving boats. Stopping by the Marine Dynamics vessel, we got some nice views of several active Bronze whaler sharks. We decided to move on and ended up around the Island system. At Dyer Island, we spotted some of the endangered African Penguins sitting on top of the island. In Shark Alley, some Cape fur seals cooled down in the water whereas others took in the sun! We headed back into deeper water where we got lucky to have spotted several pelagic birds such as Sooty Shearwaters and Shy Albatross. Towards the end of the trip, we even encountered two Humpback whales migrating together which gave us some incredible views of these giants!

The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.

As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.

With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
Sunfish Humpback Whale Humpback Whale
One of the best-known whale species, they are renowned for their acrobatic behaviour and complex melodious song as well as extremely long flippers and are a special favourite of Dyer Island Cruises guests and crew alike.

The mysterious Bryde's whales visit the Dyer Island area throughout the year, with most sightings occurring during summer into winter.
