Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa – Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 28 November 2025:
After a day of heavy wind and swells, we are back for a beautiful and calm day out at sea. Not knowing what to find out at sea today, we started the lookout early on with eyes wide open. The local Shark cage diving boats offered a few close-up looks at the local Bronze whaler sharks. Within the Pearly Beach area, we successfully spotted Southern Right whales either peacefully swimming alongside the vessel or even offering a bit of a show! Geyser Rock, with its Cape fur seal colony, was, as always, extremely busy, and its residents were not holding back, greeting our guests while entering Shark Alley. Approaching Dyer Island, some of the critically endangered African Penguins were soaking up the few rays of sun that were hitting the island. Some of our guests were even lucky to have spotted a small pod of Common dolphins searching for food within the reef system. Throughout the day, we were also accompanied by certain seabirds such as Cape Cormorants and Giant Petrels.

As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.

The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.

Southern right whales attract thousands of visitors every year to experience these gentle giants off the South African coast.
Common Dolphin Common Dolphin
With an 'hourgalss' patch on either side and aerial activity the common dolphin is an agile and majestic species, that may easily reach a speed of 40km/h.
Cape Cormorant Cape Cormorant
One of the most famous species of Cormorant in the Western Cape, the Cape Cormorant is well known for it's beautiful turquoise eye and impressive size.
Giant Petrel Giant Petrel
Around the Greater Dyer Island area we encounter both species of Giant Petrel, the Southern Giant Petrel and Northern Giant Petrel.
