Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 30 August 2023:
The conditions continued to hold nicely for today with just a slight increase in the wind from yesterday and more of a chill in the air. We had a fantastic time out on the sea for both of our trips, with visits being made to the Shallows to visit the shark cage diving vessels, of which we were able to watch some Bronze Whaler sharks around our sister company Marine Dynamics vessels. Both trips also enjoyed time around the Island system which passes by the Cape fur seal colony of Geyeer Rock which appeared to be bursting with seals on the island and in the water along with a stop in Sponge Bay, a small bay of Dyer Island which gives us the closest look at the seabird colony from our boat. But of course, it was the whales that shone today with and trips experienced a bay full of whales to the point where we were surrounded by multiple Southern Right whales, some close and some seen in the distance. This also included a variety of activities, with some calm, relaxed movements seen along with flukes, pectoral slapping, and breaching in the distance. A beautiful time on the sea on both of our trips. We would like to thank our guests for joining us today and hope they enjoyed their time out on the bay with the Dyer Island Cruises Team!

What species did we see today?
Cape fur seal Cape fur seal
With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.
Bronze Whaler Shark Bronze Whaler Shark
The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.
Southern Right Whale Southern Right Whale
Southern right whales attract thousands of visitors every year to experience these gentle giants off the South African coast.
