Monday fun day at sea! Marine Big 5 Daily Blog
Written by November 23 2020
Today we used the weather gap in the morning to head out for a Marine Big 5 tour. On our way we had a couple of cormorants flying passed us towards Kleinbaai. Arrived in the Pearly Beach area we were scanning the bay for marine life and found a juvenile penguin popping its head out the water close to our boat Whale Whisperer. Albeit searching the area thoroughly we were unable to find some Southern Right whales, but we had a great sighting of a Bryde’s whale instead, which our spotter saw in a bit of deeper water. At the Dyer Island ecosystem we saw more African penguins and plenty of Cape Fur seals on Geyser Rock. Its a great time of the year to visit the seal colony and to see all the new born pups. Unfortunately, we have some wind picking up this afternoon that will continue through the whole of tomorrow but we are already excited to go to sea again when the weather clears up.
What species did we see today?
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.
Brydes Whale Brydes Whale
The mysterious Bryde's whales visit the Dyer Island area throughout the year, with most sightings occurring during summer into winter.
Cape Cormorant Cape Cormorant
One of the most famous species of Cormorant in the Western Cape, the Cape Cormorant is well known for it's beautiful turquoise eye and impressive size.
Cape fur seal Cape fur seal
With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
Bank Cormorant Bank Cormorant
Often enjoying a broad diet including klipfish, rock lobster and more, the increasing rarety of the Bank Cormorant makes every moment we see them even more special.
