Sharks, sunfish, seals and penguins! Marine Big 5 Daily Blog 23 January
Written by January 23 2022
After a couple of days on land, the Dyer Island Cruises crew were extended to finally head back to sea on such a beautiful Sunday with barely any breeze and a calm ocean. On our way to the shark cage diving boats, we passed the shallow water and were astonished by the beautiful coastline. At the cage diving boats we got to see a great number of bronze whaler sharks. Arrived at Geyser Rock we watched the Cape fur seals before moving on to Dyer Island to see the endangered African Penguin. And out in the deep we couldn’t have asked for any better and were lucky to see not one but two sunfish swimming alongside each other. What a great sighting!

What species did we see today?
Bronze Whaler Shark Bronze Whaler Shark
The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.
Cape fur seal Cape fur seal
With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.
