A four out of five day! Marine Big 5 Daily Blog
Written by March 21 2021
A beautiful day for Whale Whisperer to take to the water after some time off the sea. Once launched from Kleinbaai harbour, Whale Whisperer crew and guests headed left along the coast towards the Shallows on the look out for dolphins and in the direction of the shark cage diving area. It was here that we were lucky to observe some fantastic Bronze Whaler shark activity, a medium sized predatory shark, this species behaviour and colour makes for some stunning encounters. Moving out towards the edges of the bay and the islands we were blown away to encounter a Bryde’s whale slowly moving into deeper waters, headed in the same direction as we were. This adult individual lead us straight to the islands where we enjoyed viewing the masses of Cape Fur seals including some young ones playing in the water and some African penguins on Dyer Island.
What species did we see today?
Bronze Whaler Shark Bronze Whaler Shark
The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.
Brydes Whale Brydes Whale
The mysterious Bryde's whales visit the Dyer Island area throughout the year, with most sightings occurring during summer into winter.
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.

With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
