Common dolphins and more! Marine Big 5 Daily Blog 20 February
Written by February 20 2022
Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 20 February 2022:
We had another beautiful day at sea with some great encounters. We launched from Kleinbaai harbour mid-morning and were heading along the coast towards the shark cage diving boats and made a stop at Slashfin, there we saw plenty of active bronze whaler sharks. On our way to Dyer Island, we stopped at a reef and had a closer look at the kelp and even got to taste some of it. Further out we spotted a sunfish and some Giant Petrels as we approached Geyser Rock. We had a great time observing the Cape fur seal, especially the pups who are getting really active and practising their swimming every day. After a closer look at some penguins on Dyer Island, we were heading towards Kleinbaai harbour, but halfway there we came across a pod of common dolphins. What a spectacular ending to our tour!

With an 'hourgalss' patch on either side and aerial activity the common dolphin is an agile and majestic species, that may easily reach a speed of 40km/h.
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.
Bronze Whaler Shark Bronze Whaler Shark
The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.

With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
Cape Cormorant Cape Cormorant
One of the most famous species of Cormorant in the Western Cape, the Cape Cormorant is well known for it's beautiful turquoise eye and impressive size.
