Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa – Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 02 January 2026:
The Marine Dynamics team is back and ready for the extraordinary sightings this year has to offer. Our trips started the year on a high note with some incredible encounters, including the shy and elusive gentle giant, the Bryde’s whale. A stop near the islands gave everyone a chance to admire the ever-playful Cape fur seals, while the critically endangered African penguins were finally seen clearly, standing boldly on the boulders and basking in the sun. Some of our trips were lucky enough to spot Indian Ocean humpback dolphins, with bronze whaler sharks adding an extra shimmer to an already unforgettable day.

What species did we see today?
Brydes Whale Brydes Whale
The mysterious Bryde's whales visit the Dyer Island area throughout the year, with most sightings occurring during summer into winter.

The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.

As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.

With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
