Marine Big 5 Daily Blog 05 November

Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.

Trip Summary 05 November 2023:

What a beautiful day out at sea today! Leaving Kleinbaai Harbour behind us we moved along the coastal area to look for some Southern Right whales. Shortly after our trips had begun we were successful. Several Southern Right whale sightings throughout the entire day. On most of our trips, we had the opportunity to stop by our Shark cage diving vessel to view some Bronze Whaler sharks. Leaving the Shark cage diving vessels behind me moved on to Geyser Rock and Dyer Island to top it off with numerous Cape fur seals and African Penguins. On our third trip of the day, we had some special visitors flying over Dyer Island a group of eight Pelicans and some bottlenose dolphins just before heading back to Kleinbaai harbour.

What species did we see today?

  • Bottlenose Dolphin

At present there are two recognized species of bottlenose dolphin, and in some cases, both species can be found in the same area. The two species are the common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), and the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (T. aduncus). In addition, there is a great deal of variation in colouration, diet and behaviour. The difference between the common bottlenose and Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin are subtle, but the common bottlenose dolphin generally larger and more robust with a slight darker colouration.
