Marine Big 5 Daily Blog 12 January

Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.

Trip Summary 12 January 2025:

The sun might not have been out today but the Marine Big 5 was! Welcoming our guests aboard we left Kleinbaai Harbour behind us. We were fortunate to spot a Bryde’s whale shortly after the start of our trip. We spent some time with it while it seemed like the whale was on the search for some fish within our bay. Before making our way to the island system a small raft of endangered African Penguins decided to visit us. Stopping by Dyer Island, home of the African Penguin colony, we made sure our guests did not come short of discovering both the islands and the penguins’ history. We of course had to stop by their neighbours the Cape fur seals. Being impressed by the number of seals on Geyser Rock they have most certainly left an impression. While heading towards coastal areas again we spotted a raft of Bottlenose dolphins casually swimming alongside the boat which offered incredible looks at this amazing species. Last but not least we made our way into the Shallows to stop by Marine Dynamics Shark cage diving vessel Slashfin. Active Bronze whaler sharks rounded up the trip and completed our Marine Big 5!

What species did we see today?

  • Bottlenose Dolphin

At present there are two recognized species of bottlenose dolphin, and in some cases, both species can be found in the same area. The two species are the common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), and the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (T. aduncus). In addition, there is a great deal of variation in colouration, diet and behaviour. The difference between the common bottlenose and Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin are subtle, but the common bottlenose dolphin generally larger and more robust with a slight darker colouration.
