Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 12 September 2022:
With two fantastic trips out around our Greater Dyer Island Area, we were so lucky to have encountered 4/5 of the marine big 5 on both our trips!
With Humpback Whales sighted on our first trip and Southern Right Whales on the second, we were able to enjoy a variety of marine life out at sea. Geyser Rock was bustling with seal activity and we witnessed a lot of them swimming about in Shark Alley taking advantage of the beautiful weather. Dyer Island gave us some incredible looks at our endangered African Penguin and the shark cage diving vessels were a hive of activity with Bronze Whaler sharks giving us a show around the cage. Not only were we able to encounter these animals but the bird activity was spectacular, we were able to spot various Tern species, White-Chinned Petrels, Giant Petrels, Albatross, Bank Cormorants, Cape Cormorants as well as some Sooty Shearwaters.
We’d like to extend a thank you to all that joined us on our trips today, it was a pleasure having you on board.

What species did we see today?
Bronze Whaler Shark Bronze Whaler Shark
The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.
Humpback Whale Humpback Whale
One of the best-known whale species, they are renowned for their acrobatic behaviour and complex melodious song as well as extremely long flippers and are a special favourite of Dyer Island Cruises guests and crew alike.
Southern Right Whale Southern Right Whale
Southern right whales attract thousands of visitors every year to experience these gentle giants off the South African coast.
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.
Cape fur seal Cape fur seal
With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
