Marine Big 5 Daily Blog 20 April

Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.

Trip Summary 20 April 2024:

The fog still hangs over the bay but this didn’t keep us on land. Past Uilenkraalsmond we spotted two bottlenose dolphins in very shallow waters. We got some nice looks and then moved on to the shark cage diving boats, where we saw a brief shadow of a bronze whaler shark below the surface. As usual, we were heading into the deep to find some whales and were lucky to spot a few spouts and even got a brief look at a Bryde’s whale or two and some penguins. The Cape fur seal colony was a highlight as usual and we also stopped at Dyer Island before heading to the harbour in Kleinbaai.

What species did we see today?

  • Bottlenose Dolphin
    Bottlenose Dolphin

At present there are two recognized species of bottlenose dolphin, and in some cases, both species can be found in the same area. The two species are the common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), and the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (T. aduncus). In addition, there is a great deal of variation in colouration, diet and behaviour. The difference between the common bottlenose and Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin are subtle, but the common bottlenose dolphin generally larger and more robust with a slight darker colouration.
