Marine Big 5 Daily Blog 28 December
Written by December 28 2022
Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 28 December 2022:
A little bit of a water rollercoaster on the bay today as we made our way through the deeper waters, the shallow coastal waters and also around the Island system for all three of the days’ trips. All the trips enjoyed sightings around the island system of the Cape fur seals on Geyser Rock as they enjoyed the sunshine or cooled off in the water and of the Endangered African penguins of Dyer Island. We were able to visit our sister company, Marine Dynamics, which was out in the bay doing some shark cage diving, and enjoyed the view of Bronze whaler sharks as they came to the surface. The day was also filled with a number of seabird sightings throughout the bay.

The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.

As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.
Cape fur seal Cape fur seal
With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
