Marine Big 5 Daily Post 03 October
Written by October 3 2023
Whale Watching near Cape Town, South Africa Welcome to Gansbaai, home of the Marine Big 5.
Trip Summary 03 October 2023:
We had another sunny day with plenty of whales, Cape fur seals, sharks, and penguins. Shortly after leaving Kleinbaai Harbour and just outside Uilenkraalsmond we spotted Southern right whales. The whales around us were very relaxed and in the distance we had some southern right whale calves breaching throughout the bay on the first tour. During our Marine Big 5 Tour, we also passed through the Shallows to see some Bronze Whaler sharks at the shark cage diving boats. And before the end of the tour, we took a drive to Dyer Island to see the penguins and have a closer look at the thousands of Cape Fur seals on Geyser Rock.
The second trip and third of the day followed in a similar, successful fashion with some absolutely stunning whale encounters, including breaching seen in the distance. This trip made a visit to the shark cage diving boats to see the Bronze Whaler sharks before spending some time around the islands, viewing the Cape fur seals of Geyser Rock and the birds, including the African penguins on Dyer Island.

The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.

Southern right whales attract thousands of visitors every year to experience these gentle giants off the South African coast.
Cape fur seal Cape fur seal
With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.
African Penguin African Penguin
As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.
Cape Cormorant Cape Cormorant
One of the most famous species of Cormorant in the Western Cape, the Cape Cormorant is well known for it's beautiful turquoise eye and impressive size.

Often enjoying a broad diet including klipfish, rock lobster and more, the increasing rarety of the Bank Cormorant makes every moment we see them even more special.
